Comments: In 1889 Ralph and
Richard Wilson formed "Wilson Bros." to produce biscuit and
tea tins in their back garden shed. In 1893 they moved into more
suitable premises in North Melbourne where they also produced
foodstuffs and bicycle repair kits. In 1915 the company became
"Wilson Bros Pty Ltd" after Richard retired from the
partnership. In the 1920's the company was known for its Willow
pattern kitchenware; even though they still produced a wide range of
other printed tin ware, and eventually the company name was changed
to "Willow Ware Pty Ltd" in 1965.
This rare biscuit tin dates from 1930 and features the very
early, crude and unlicensed graphics of "Mickey Mouse" and
"Minnie Mouse". It features the two on their wedding day in
their old jalopy carrying a big block of cheese, I don't know when
this momentous event occurred but it must have been shortly after
their first meeting in 1928 in the movie titled "Plane Crazy".
There are several animals dancing and celebrating the event
including a horse beating a tin can with a stick, and interestingly
there is a cartoon bubble saying "BANG"!
The tin is very presentable but it does have some wear and tear, and
it comes with its original lift off lid.
