Comments: "Robert Burns" (1759-1796) was a Scottish poet and a lyricist, and he is considered to be a pioneer of the "Romantic Movement". "Rabbie Burns" as he is also known, is regarded as the Scottish national poet and a cultural icon, he also collected and revised old Scottish folk songs. His best known works are "Auld Lang Syne", "A Red, Red Rose", "The Battle of Sherramuir", "To a Louse", "Scots Wha Hae" "To a Mouse" and "A Man's A Man for A' That".
The 25th January is "Burns Hight", a celebration that begins with the "Selkirk Grace", followed by the piping and the cutting of the haggis, the "Address to a haggis" is read and it is then eaten by the guests, followed by the "Immortal Memory" and the whole event is concluded by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne".
The illustration on the lid is taken from the original portrait by "Alexander Naismith" painted in 1787. The sides show highly detailed scenes of "Auld Galloway Kirk", "Auld Brig O' Doon", "The Auld Brig, Ayr", "Burn's Monument, banks of Doon", "Burn's Cottage, Alloway, Ayr", "Interior of Burn's Cottage" and "Burn's Monument, Kilmarnock".
