Comments: The cigar tin is very
nicely litho printed with a highly detailed portrait of "William
Penn" with his signature. The edge of the picture says "Label
Registered by Theobald & Oppenheimer Co."
William Penn (1644-1718) was the founder of a Quaker settlement
in 1681 in an area that was to become the future state of
Pennsylvania and he was made the "Absolute Proprietor" of this
English North American colony. He wanted to simply name the land
"Sylvania"; the Latin for woods, however King Charles II wanted to acknowledge his
debts to Penn's father, the Admiral William Penn and insisted on the
preface Penn, hence it was named "Pennsylvania".
Penn was one of the founding fathers of the US and he single handedly
produced a democratic constitution; which served as an inspiration
for the US Constitution, and he ruled a large tract of land before
1776. Early on he urged for a "Union" of all the English
colonies in what was to become the USA and he also considered a plan
for a "United States of Europe".To view other images of this item, please click here:
