Comments: This biscuit sample tin features a picture of "Kenilworth castle"  in Warwickshire painted by "John Syer RI".
There have been fortifications on this site since Saxon times and the current ruins are of Norman origins about 1125 with various additions and alterations over the following centuries. It was the site of a famous siege in 1266 and it was stormed by troops in 1656 during the English Civil War. Legend has it that Elizabeth I gave birth to an illegitimate baby during her month stay here in 1575, during which time she also tasted the first potato brought into England, which she disliked, probably because she ate it raw!
