Comments: "All the Fun of the
Fair", "A fascinating game for all comers" and
"Prize. A selection of Peek Frean's delightful biscuits found inside
the tin" says the game rules!
This very rare biscuit tin was produced for "Peek Frean" in
1931. It is complete with all eleven pieces; including the rules,
and totally all original. There is a colourful paper label going
around the circumference of the tin illustrated with fairground
scenes and a large paper label on the lid depicting a "Cocoanut
Shies", both are in very good condition.
"Coconut shy" is a traditional English funfair game where you
throw wooden balls at coconuts mounted on posts; typically very
tightly lodged, and you win the coconut if you knock it off on to
the ground. In the nineteenth century a cocoanut; the old fashioned
spelling, would have been considered an exotic prize and "shy"
is a colloquial term for "to throw". "Cocoanut shies"
are mentioned in "H.G. Well's" book "The Invisible Man"
first published in 1898.
