Comments: This very well
illustrated and highly detailed biscuit tin was produced by
"Huntley and Palmer" in 1896. It shows scenes from a Victorian
tiger hunt taking place in India, where the English men are hunting
with rifles from the top of their elephants. The tin is very
presentable, but it does have some spotting and an area of paint
loss on the left hand panel. The tin is the same shape as
"Showman" and has a hinged lid.
"H&P"
was the number one biscuit manufacturer in Victorian times in
England, and probably the world, as they produced nearly 600,000
tons of biscuits between 1859 and 1899 which were exported all over
the globe! They had obviously come a long way since Joseph Huntley
opened his small bakery in 1822 opposite the Crown Inn in Reading.
