Comments: This is a very good
example of an early transfer printed tin, dating from the 1880's.
This process was a very time consuming way of decorating tin plate
and these tins acquire an attractive craquelure over the years;
similar to old paintings.
This tin has four
highly detailed illustrations which demonstrate what life was like
on a Victorian plantation, "Ceylon coffee plantation",
"Ceylon tea
plantation", "weighing tea", and "sorting tea". There are at least
four different sizes of this tin, some were for tea and some were
for coffee. This one states that it contained "a mixture of coffee
and chicory", on the lift off lid.
The tin is in good condition, with some minor
signs of ageing.
