| Comments: This tin is well
lithographed and has a fantastic form. "Huntley and Palmer"
produced four tins with the same shape, size and form; "Pompeian"
c1893, "Indian" c1894, "Dresden" c1895 and
"Japanese" c1908. The
illustrations on the tin show scenes and artifacts relating to
Pompeii; street scenes, recreational activities, statues, mosaics
and mythical creatures. The lid shows a street scene with a
triumphal arch and in the distance you can see a smoking Mount
Vesuvius about to explode! This famous eruption destroyed the Roman
city of Pompeii in 79 AD and is still the only active volcano on
mainland Europe. The tin is in good condition with some wear and
tear commensurate with age and there is a little surface rust on the
