Comments: This "Yule Log"
biscuit tin has three Christmas scenes on the sides "the felling
of the tree", "the home bringing" and "the joyous
Christmastide welcome". The hatchet on the top serves as the
handle to the lift off lid.
The "Yule Log" or "Great Ashen Faggot" is a large
freshly cut log that is burnt in the fireplace at Christmas
and probably originates from a ancient Germanic pagan custom. The
spread of Christianity through Europe has resulted in this pagan
symbol now becoming part of the Christmas celebrations.
A most unusual biscuit tin!
