Comments: This nicely
illustrated tin originally held 20 cigars made in "Wascana's"
factory in Kampen, Holland. It has a different illustration inside
the lid of an Indian smoking a pipe with three wigwams in the
background.
The Cree word "oskana" means bones and was corrupted by the
European settlers arriving in Saskatchewan to "wascana",
which referred to the large pile of buffalo bones built by the
native Americans after butchering the animals, as a spirit offering
to ensure that the supply of animals never ran out. This place was
known as "Pile O' Bones" and was renamed in 1882 "Regina"
after Queen Victoria. In 1883 it was made the capital of the
Northwest Territories and in 1905 the capital of the newly formed
province Saskatchewan.
