Comments: These early "One Cent" chewing gum tins were made by "Schulman's & Co." and date from just before "The Great War". There are two flavours "Blood Orange" and "Violet" and they were guaranteed "under Food and Drugs Act 1906".
"Chicle" is the natural gum collected from the Manilkara chicle tree which grows in the American tropics. Traditionally it was used in chewing gum, "Wrigley" was major user, but very few companies still use it as an ingredient. The latest gums tend to use a petrochemical based plastic instead.
Chewing gum, in various forms, has been around since at least Ancient Greece. The modern variety first manufactured in the 1860's when chicle was first imported from Mexico into America.
