| Comments: The "British Empire
Exhibition" was opened by King George V on St. George's Day, 23rd
April, at Wembley in London. It was a very large exhibition,
incorporating 56 out of the 58 countries that formed The British
Empire at the time. The idea was "To stimulate trade, strengthen
bonds that bind mother country to her Sister States and Daughters,
to bring into closer contact the one with each other, to enable all
who owe allegiance to the British flag to meet on common ground and
learn to know each other". It was the largest exhibition ever
staged, costing 12 million pounds and it attracted over 17 million
visitors. Prattware is basically
multicoloured underglazed printed pottery, the major manufacturer
being "F & R Pratt", which was particularly popular in the
nineteenth century, as people found such items very attractive and
were amused by the different stories that each one told. These pots
normally contained products such as gentleman's relish, bear's
grease, cosmetics or caviar. This one is particularly interesting as
it is a much later example and the illustration on the lid is titled
"Persuasion".
The pot is in very good condition, but if you look
at photo 6 you will see a tiny chip on the underside of the lid.
