Comments: "Hakoah
Wein" was a Jewish sports club based in Vienna prior to WWII. It
was best known for their football team and it produced several
Olympic athletes. It was founded by two Austrian Zionists "Fritz
Löhrner" and "Ignaz Körner" in 1909, following the
doctrine of "Muscular Judaism" proposed by "Max Nordau".
"Hakoah" comes from the Hebrew for "the strength".
Following the anschluss in Austria the club was closed down by the
Nazis in 1938.
I purchased this rare medal in Vienna just before the "Hakoah"
sports club complex was formally re-opened on the 11th March 2008 in
Vienna, seventy years since it was confiscated by the Nazis! To view other images
