Comments: "Uhlan"
comes from the Tartar for "brave warrior", they were
originally Polish light cavalry officers, however they later served
in the Austrian and Prussian armies. They typically wore a square
topped hat; "czapka", and a double breasted jacket;
"kurta", with a coloured panel at the front. The British
equivalent would have been the lancers.
This ceramic piece in the form of a saluting soldier guarding a
basket, was designed to hold non safety matches which would have
