Comments: This unusual
bonbons tin shows an black boy seated between two palm trees in the
Caribbean holding a sugar loaf. The cylindrical tin is in very good
condition, was manufactured in Germany in the 1920's and has a lift
off lid.
The sugarloaf was the old fashioned way that sugar was exported from
the Caribbean in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, it looked like
tall cylinder with a conical top. They were large 14 to 36 inches
tall and weighed 14 to 30 pound each, and the sugar was broken off
in pieces by using special iron sugar cutters. You still see them
used in Germany for the Christmas drink "Feuerzangenbowle".
